Change in Council Status

At our June West Hill Cambridge Neighborhood Council board meeting, the board shared in extensive conversation as to the status, function, and future possibilities for the Neighborhood Council. What is our purpose and how can we continue in some fashion to have a pulse on the welfare of our neighborhood?

We determined that we do have neighbors who care. This is evident in the numbers of you who attended the May 18 Glenn Nelson Park event and by how many of you are taking on the entrance cleanup projects. There are several of you who routinely ask questions about the schools and access to those grounds. There are many of you who continue to contact the Council with concerns about code violations (to which we continue to direct you to the City’s website).

The Council concurs that a change in status is appropriate. The leaders are the same as those first elected when the Council first formed and are ready to pass these opportunities off to new leaders. Therefore: “The West Hill Cambridge Neighborhood Council proposes that the Council amend its bylaws to declare the Council a “non-program, neighborhood advocacy group.”

At our next General Meeting on September 28, we will present this to you, our neighbors for discussion and ratification. A new set of bylaws will be drawn up for your approval.

In essence, we will be changing format. We will not be meeting as routinely as we had been and will be only bring in speakers or information if the neighborhood is facing some kind of issue. We ask our neighbors to consider taking on a role in this advocacy leadership group. Help us be the eyes and ears and network to secure the wellbeing of our neighborhood.
